New climbing boulder graces park in Squamish, BC

New climbing boulder graces park in Squamish, BC

“It’s the perfect thing to get people out climbing. You don’t need much equipment and the landing is soft—no crash pad required.” The “it” Andrew Coffey, Owner and King Worker Bee of The Hive Bouldering Gyms, is describing is the new custom climbing boulder in Junction Park in Squamish, BC. The boulder, surrounded by a soft bed of mulch, adds a bit of rock climbing to the mountain biking and other outdoor pursuits offered in the park. The addition of the boulder to Junction Park was a collaboration between The Hive, the District of Squamish, and the Climbers Access Society of British Columbia. “The District was looking to encourage people to enjoy the recreational opportunities the town has to offer and increase participation in outdoor activities,” noted Coffey. A public/private partnership was formed and together they raised funds for the boulder and arranged for its placement in the park. The boulder was created by Eldorado Climbing Walls in Boulder, CO. The shape, color, texture, and cracks were designed to mimic nearby stone like the granite face and features of the iconic Chief that serves as the backdrop for the park. “I love the look of it,” comments Coffey. “It fits perfectly with the rocks around Squamish. It feels and climbs like real rock.” The design of the boulder was very intentional. “We started on the macro scale and worked our way down to the micro,” explains Eldorado’s Director of Design & Product Development, Jason Thomas. “When recreating regional rock types, we look at the larger elements first—the overall silhouette, grooves where water flows, dominant cracks, roofs, corners and other... read more
